I have many favourite Psalms. Psalm 91 is one I love.
I’m spending time with these words this week. They seem “just for me.”
You protect me as an eagle shields
its young,
Your faithfulness is sure,
like an arrow set upon the mark.
I will not fear the shadows of the night,
nor the confusion that comes by day,
Nor the dreams that awaken me from
sleep,
nor the daily changes that
life brings.
(from Ps. 91 Nan Merrill, Psalms for Praying)
What’s special about eagles? Here is what I am learning.
An Eagle’s nest is special. It can be huge, stretching upward to 20 feet and reaching nine feet wide. The Eagle wants the chicks to feel safe. Eagles are very good about taking care of their young.
Eagle’s eyes are special. Do you know an eagle has strong vision and can see an object as small as a rabbit from hundreds of feet in the air? (poor rabbit)
The eagle is a strong bird and flies much higher than many other birds, I’m told.
The Eagle is a valued symbol in indigenous culture/religion in many parts of the world. The eagle’s represents spiritual growth, focus, great strength, peace, and leadership. In First Nations, the Eagle feather plays a part in ceremonies.
In the bible God is pictured as a Mother Eagle. Like an eagle, God only wants to take good care of us, protect us us under her wings and love us through hard things.
God also wants us to learn to fly on our own. The bible says an eagle mother actually pushes her chicks out of the nest so they can learn to fly. If they flounder, she catches them on her wings. This is a wonderful image of God challenging us to learn and try news things and stretch our faith.
These days I am taking courage from this Psalm and contemplating Christ, the Eagle.
O Christ, the Eagle,
caring for us in our chaos,
giving us power for our faintness,
supplying strength for our weariness,
present with us when we are broken-hearted,
providing hope when we are discouraged.
O Christ the eagle,
be our encouraging vision.
I hope you find something in Psalm 91 just for you this week.
Peace on your day, Janice

I love the imagery you've invoked for us with this psalm, Janice. I just so appreciate the "caring for us in chaos" and "giving us power for our faintness". Thanks so much for this - just what I needed today!
